Mandalas or Raised Fists? The Revolution will be digitized (Week 1)
This read by Simon Sadler was particularly interesting in
terms of understanding hippie holism and its underlying comparison to Black
Panther Party. On page 1, it is mentioned that Black Panther Party and Whole
Earth Catalog overlap one another rather like a Venn diagram, each committed to
a deep, bottom-up reorganization of the world through self-reliance, yet doing
so with subtly dissimilar conceptions of the whole.
I was intrigued by the idea wherein the hippies brought in modern
lineage, blending in something new with something old. Survival was both
hippies and Panthers goal, but this was being experienced rather differently
within both the communities. Hippie holism looked at their survival as a population
problem, or rather spreading out as a community. While for the Panthers it was
rejection from the society (the ultimate idea of inequality due to the minority
of the community), devoid of economic luxury and military constraints.
What I take from this is that hippies and the people reading
the Whole Earth Catalog preferred life outside and secluded from the society.
Ironically, on the other hand, the Panthers wanted to fit into the society,
enjoying the equal rights and opportunities.
