Hi.

Learning Hindi vowels using Unity: Augmented Reality

Learning Hindi vowels using Unity: Augmented Reality

For my project with augmented reality, I wanted to do something personal using Unity as my tool.

As an Indian, I had Hindi as my third language in middle school. I had always and still do struggle with vowel accents and words associated with those vowels. I decided to use augmented reality to help students like me to understand how to best pronounce these accents with a supporting audio and words that represent these vowels with visuals.

For my image targets, I used Hindi vowels placed on patterns and then had images of words and my audio as triggers.

On using the Unity software, I realized that Vuforia was not reading the image targets well enough. As a result, I decided the change the image to the word images themselves and the trigger images as the words. Hence, the images below were now my image targets, and the images above were my image triggers with the audio.

Aim: The aim of this project was to educate students to pronounce Hindi accents correctly while at the same times using the right words for those accents.

Next Steps: For next steps, I would like to make a dictionary of more words, that would pronounce these accents for students in different ways. My final aim would be for these image targets to be a deck of flash cards.
