Hi.

Welcome to my blog. Here, I document my daily blogs, learning experiences, and some fun projects.

Disobedient Objects: Bullying: Critical Object

Disobedient Objects: Bullying: Critical Object

2/2

Today, my partner Stacy and I met up to discuss the read of ‘Disobedient Objects’. We both liked the metaphorical meaning extracted from various topics explained those examples.

Stacy and I first started out listing down topics of social just we each cared about.

Stacy:

  • Environment

  • Bullying

  • Privacy

Shannel:

  • Period Stigma

  • Mental Health

  • Dependency on Social Media

On discussing the topics mentioned above in detail, we both agreed to work on bullying as our topic to prototype a disobedient object.

Aim: To initiate a conversation on bullying.

On doing research, we learnt that there are 4 types of bullying; social, verbal, physical and cyber. Understanding what each kind of bullying meant, we both picked up on the fundamental problem of a bullying victim not finding himself/herself fitting in well with the rest.

And so we both came across the statement that further pushed our creative imagination: “ Everyone fits in”

This statement helped us move forward with conceptualizing
our project. We decided to use the phrase fitting in to target discriminatory practices
towards bullying victims. Stacy and I thought it would be interesting to design a
simple and minimal game that helped users fight the conventional idea of
placing someone where you would ideally think they belong to. We wanted to use
colors to create categories that would stand a metaphor for typical social
groups.

We planned on using 3 boxes, two of the blue color and one
of a yellow color. These 3 boxes would then be prompted to be put in the two holes
provided of the color blue and yellow respectively. Typically, this would
enable the convention that the yellow box belongs in the yellow hole whereas
the blue boxes belong in the blue hole. However, the screen flashes “Everyone
fits in!!!” as soon as all the three boxes are put together in either the yellow
or the blue hole.

This hopefully challenges the discriminatory practice of
bullying and triggers a conversation amongst users for the same topic.
